How to Guide: Brew a Pour Over Filter Coffee with Hario V60

So you're looking to start brewing filter coffee but don't know where to start? Well... Hario's V60 brewer is probably your best bet for brewing pour-over style filter coffee.

At first, brewing filter coffee seems complicated, but we've made an easy-to-follow method and video that will help you achieve a fantastic filter brew every time.

What you'll need

To get started, you'll need a few things. All of these things are available from our Axil online store. See the links below for everything you need.

The Method: Let's start brewing.

Now we have everything we need to brew an excellent filter coffee. Let's begin brewing.

Phase 1: Prep

  1. Boil your water to 93C.

  2. While your water is heating up. Grab your scales, decanter, and V60 brewing apparatus. Pop your V60 and decanter on the scales.

  3. Grind your 15.5g of filter coffee. Getting the grind size "right" might take a little bit of playing around. As a general rule of thumb, try and aim for your coffee grinds to be around the same size as a grain of salt.

  4. Fold the filter paper along the seam and pop it in your V60 vessel.

  5. Begin to pour hot water through the filter paper. This is to remove any unwanted paper notes from entering the cup.

  6. Throw away the water in the decanter.

  7. Grab your 15.5g of ground filter coffee and put it into the V60.

  8. Tare your scales.

Phase 2 - The Bloom

  1. The Bloom: Pour 30g of hot water over your coffee grinds, making sure to saturate all the grinds. This is to de-gas the coffee and allow the coffee flavours to open up, getting the coffee ready for the brewing phase.

Phase 3 - The Extraction

  1. After 30 seconds, pour in another 100g of water.

  2. After 1 minute, pour in another 100g of water.

  3. After 1 minute 30 seconds pour in the remaining of water, taking the total weight to 235g.
